15 Core Structures

1. SVO (Subject–Verb–Object)

She opened the window.
They visited their grandparents.
The dog chased the ball.
He cooked dinner for everyone.
The rain damaged the garden.
We watched an interesting movie.

2. SVioO (Subject–Verb–Indirect Object–Direct Object)

She gave her friend a nice gift.
He sent me a funny message.
They showed the children the pictures.
Mom made us some delicious cookies.
The teacher taught the students a new game.
I told him the whole story.

3. SVC (Subject–Verb–Complement)

The weather is beautiful today.
This book seems interesting.
The soup tastes delicious.
She looks tired after the trip.
The rules are very clear.
The music sounds relaxing.

4. Prepositional Phrases

We met after school.
The keys are on the table.
She travels with her family.
He spoke in a loud voice.
The letter was written by my sister.
They arrived on Friday.

5. Gerund Phrases

Learning new languages is fun.
Walking in the park makes me happy.
Cooking dinner takes time.
Reading books helps improve vocabulary.
Listening to music relaxes me.
Playing sports keeps you healthy.

6. Infinitive Phrases

I want to visit Japan.
She decided to change her job.
They plan to move next year.
He forgot to call his mother.
The best thing is to stay calm.
We hope to finish early.

7. Participle Phrases

Tired after work, she went straight to bed.
Excited about the trip, the children packed quickly.
Built last year, the bridge looks very modern.
(The man standing near the door) is my uncle.
(A book written by a famous author) is on the table.
(The girl wearing a red hat) is my cousin.

8. Cause → Effect

Heavy rain caused flooding in the streets.
The mistake led to a big argument.
Regular exercise results in better health.
Lack of sleep made her feel tired.
The loud music woke the baby.
Good preparation helped us succeed.

9. Contrast

It was cold, but we still went swimming.
He studied hard, yet he didn’t pass.
The movie was long, however, it was exciting.
She is small, but very strong.
The food tasted good; still, it was too spicy.
He wanted to come, but he was busy.

10. Condition

If it rains, we will stay home.
If you study, you will pass the exam.
If she calls, please tell her I’m busy.
If we leave now, we won’t be late.
If he forgets, remind him tomorrow.
If you feel sick, see a doctor.
Inverted:
We will stay home if it rains.
You will pass the exam if you study.
Please tell her I’m busy if she calls.
We won’t be late if we leave now.
Remind him tomorrow if he forgets.

11. Purpose

She went to the library to borrow books.
He woke up early to catch the train.
We saved money to buy a new phone.
They spoke quietly to avoid waking the baby.

She turned on the light to see better.

12. Reason / Explanation

We stayed inside because of the rain.
He was late due to traffic.
She smiled because she was happy.
The game was canceled because of bad weather.
I didn’t call because I forgot.
They moved to be closer to family.

13. Reporting / Stance Clauses

She said that she was tired.
The news reported that the concert was canceled.
He thinks that it will rain later.
They believe the movie is great.
The teacher explained that homework is important.
Everyone knows that exercise is good for you.

14. Comparison

Compared to last year, this summer is hotter.
This phone is more expensive than the older model.
She is as tall as her brother.
The train is faster than the bus.
This restaurant is better than the one nearby.
The second movie was less interesting than the first.

15. Sequencing / Process

Model sentences:
First, turn on the computer.

Then, write the message.
After that, proofread the message.
During proofreading, change any mistakes.
Finally, click send.
Alternative forms:
After finishing breakfast, she brushed her teeth.
Having checked the weather, they decided to go out.
While waiting for the bus, he read a book.
