01Step up
To take on more responsibility or perform at a higher level, especially when a situation requires it.
With the manager out sick, Daniel really stepped up and kept the team on track all week. A: We're short two people this weekend. Do you think you can handle it? B: I'll step up. Just tell me what you need.
02Catch someone off guard
To surprise someone in a way they were not prepared for; to encounter a person at a moment when they are not ready.
The question during the interview really caught me off guard — I hadn't prepared for anything like that. A: Did you see her reaction when they announced the winner? B: Yeah, I think it completely caught her off guard. She didn't know what to say.
03Have a say/Have no say
To have the right or opportunity to give your opinion or influence a decision.
(have no say means being denied that opportunity)
The employees felt frustrated because they had no say in how the new schedule was organized. A: Did anyone ask the residents before they approved the construction? B: No, and that's exactly the problem — the community should have had a say.
