Foundation is the first layer of makeup that you put on. It's purpose is to help even your skin tone. It is not meant to replace your natural skin tone. So try and keep your foundation color as close to your natural skin color as possible. A slight shade or two darker or lighter is okay.
Concealer is thicker than foundation. It is meant to cover blemishes, skin spots, and dark circles around/under the eyes.
Contouring,
Bronzing and Highlighting
Contouring is blending shades of colors to enhance your faces natural shape (structure). Some people call this sculpting.
Contouring has a matte effect which means it is not shiny or glossy. The light effect is very flat, the shadow effect is very strong.
Bronzing, on the other hand, is a very shiny or glossy, glowing look. The light effect is very strong.
Bronzing Palette / Bronzing Shades
Highlighter
(highlighting)
Use for adding that bit of extra light-reflection to the highest areas of your face. Give your cheekboness that extra lift.

Lip liner, Lipstick, and Lip gloss
Lipliner: You use this to line the lips and give them a fuller look.
Put this on before your lipstick. It will blend better.
Lipstick: This brings color or shimmer or definition to your lips.

[at the department store]
Mother: So, what do you need from the cosmetics section today?
Daughter: I'm not sure yet. I'm thinking about getting a new foundation and some eyeliner.
Mother: Okay, let's take a look at what they have.
Mother: [to the store clerk] Excuse me miss, could you tell which way to the beauty section?
Clerk: I'd be happy to. Just go down four aisles from here, that should be aisle number 7. Turn right. The Beauty and Personal care section is a big area in that far corner. You can't miss it. The beauty section includes cosmetics, skin care products , and fragrances.
Daughter: Thank you, Miss, you've been very helpful.
[They approach the cosmetics counter]
Beauty Consultant: Hello. How may I help you today?
Mother: We're looking for some foundation for my daughter.
Consultant: Come down to this end of the counter and let's take a look. [she reaches in the counter and pulls out some foundation].
Judging by your skin tone, I think I have just what you need. [She hands a small palette to the daughter]. This is from our Rizzo product line. It's very popular these days. This palette here looks close to your shade of skin tone.
Daughter: Why a palette? I'm used to just buying a single bottle of foundation.
Consultant: Of course you can do that, but it's often hard to get a good match to your own color. Not only that, our skin tone changes slightly if we get more or less sun throughout the year. Our palettes come in four shades that are only slightly different from each other. You can blend them to get a much better match to your own skin tone. You can't do that with a single color foundation.
Daughter: You mean, it's a little like contouring?
Consultant: No, not really. These shades are not good for contouring, they are low contrasting shades of color, while contouring requires high contrasting shades. You still want a single color, generally. You just blend the colors with your brush before you apply it to your skin. You can do it right on the brush, or the lid of the palette.
Daughter: That sounds great. But my complexion is naturally oily.
Consultant: No problem. Rizzo has you covered. There is a product for nearly every skin tone and complexion. The one I gave you has an oil-free base. You'll be just fine. But just so you no, this foundation have a more matte look and less of a dewy look.
Mother: That sounds like a good choice. Can we try it on? (try it out)
Consultant: Sure, come over here and take a seat at our makeover station.
Mother: Is everything clean?
Consultant: Yes, m'am. Not only do we thoroughly wash and disinfect all our tools, but we also store everything in our UV sanitizer. Please, have a seat.
[consultant applies the foundation]
Daughter: This is perfect! It feels so light on my skin. It's not oily, nor is it cakey.
Mother: I'm glad you like it. [to consultant] We'll take it. We also need some eyeliner.
Consultant: Sure, let's go back to the counter and have a look.
Perfumes (fragrances, scents for women), Cologne (for men)
Daughter: Mom, I'm looking for a new perfume. Do you have any recommendations?
Mother: Sure, there are a lot of great perfumes out there. What kind of scent are you looking for?
Daughter: I'm not sure. I guess something that's fresh and
light. (ant.: strong, heavy)
Mother: Well, I really like "Rizzo #2". It's a very popular perfume, and it's got a really nice floral scent.
Daughter: Oh, I've heard of that one. It sounds nice.
Mother: Here, let me spray it on you so you can try it. (spritz)
(The mother picks up a sample bottle and sprays the perfume on the daughter's wrist.)
Daughter: Oh, that's really nice! It's not too strong, and it smells really good.
Mother: I'm glad you like it.
Daughter: I think I'm going to buy it.
Mother: Great! I'm glad I could help.
Daughter: Excuse me, can you help me? I'm looking for a bottle of Rizzo #2 perfume.
Clerk: Sure, we have a few different sizes and prices. What size are you looking for?
Daughter: I'm not sure. What are the different sizes and prices?
Clerk: We have a 1.7 ounce bottle for $50, a 3.4 ounce bottle for $75, and a 5.0 ounce bottle for $100.
Mother: I think we'll take the 3.4 ounce bottle.
Clerk: Great! That will be $75. How would you like to pay? (Will that be cash or credit card?)
Mother: I'll pay with credit card.
(The cashier swipes her credit card and mother signs the receipt.) (at restaurant: receipt, check, bill) (not ticket)
Clerk: Would you like me to gift-wrap the perfume?
Mother: Yes, please.
(The clerk gift-wraps the perfume and puts it in a fancy
bag.) (ant. plain)
Mother: Thank you.
Clerk: You're welcome.
Mother: So, what do you think of these two spas?
Daughter: They both look great! I'm not sure which one to choose.
Mother: Well, let's take a closer look at their amenities. (and facilities)
(The mother and daughter look at the brochures for the two spas.)
Mother: The first spa has a pool, a hot tub, a sauna, and a steam room. It also offers a variety of massages, facials, and body treatments.
Daughter: That sounds great! I love swimming and I've always wanted to try a Swedish massage.
Mother: The second spa has a smaller pool, but it also has a Jacuzzi, a salt room, and a relaxation room. It offers a similar variety of massages, facials, and body treatments.
Daughter: The salt room sounds interesting. I've never tried anything like that before.
Mother: Well, it's supposed to be very relaxing.
Daughter: I think I'm leaning towards the second spa.
Mother: That's fine. I think it would be a great choice.
(The mother and daughter make a reservation at the second spa.)
Daughter: I'm so excited! This is going to be so much fun.
Mother: Me too. I can't wait to relax and pamper ourselves.
Mother: Hello, I'd like to make an appointment for a massage.
Spa Representative: Sure, what day and time would you like?
Mother: How about tomorrow at 1:00pm?
Spa Representative: I'm sorry, that time is already taken. Would you like 2:00pm instead?
Mother: No, that's too close to dinner time. I'd like to make it for 11:00am instead.
Spa Representative: Sure, I have an opening at 11:00am. Is that okay?
Mother: Yes, that's perfect. Thank you.
Spa Representative: You're welcome. What is your name and phone number?
Mother: My name is Sarah and my phone number is 555-555-5555.
Spa Representative: Thank you, Sarah. So let me confirm: Your appointment
is 11:00am tomorrow, and your phone number is 555-555-5555.
Mother: Yes, that's Correct. Thank you. I'll see you then.
Spa Representative: See you then, goodbye.

Mother: It was amazing! We had a wonderful time.
Daughter: Yeah, it was so much fun. We loved relaxing in the natural hot springs and exploring the forest.

Marta: That sounds absolutely delicious! Did you have any other noteworthy meals?
Daughter: I had the grilled steak. It was cooked to perfection—tender and juicy. The roasted vegetables were good too.
Marta: It sounds like a very satisfying meal. What about the service? Did you find it satisfactory?
Mom: The service was good. The staff was attentive and friendly. They really took care of us. It really added an extra layer of enjoyment to our vacation experience.
Daughter: Yes, I was more relaxed knowing were were never too far away from good food.
Marta: That's true. Bad food would certainly ruin an otherwise great spa experience.
Mother: Listen, we have to run. I've got a golf lesson to attend. It was so nice seeing you.
Daughter: Nice seeing you, Marta.
Marta: Wonderful to hear about your vacation. I'll see you soon, I'm sure.
Customer: Hi, I'm looking to buy some makeup, can you help me?
Beauty Stylist: Of course! I'd be happy to help you find the perfect makeup products. What specific makeup items are you interested in purchasing? Are there any particular areas or concerns you'd like to address?
Customer: Well, I feel the the shape of my face is rather flat, I don't have pronounced cheekbones.
Beauty Stylist: I understand. If you'd like to enhance your facial features and create the illusion of more pronounced cheekbones, contouring and highlighting can be very helpful. Have you tried contouring before?
Customer: What's contouring?
Beauty Stylist: Contouring is a makeup technique used to create shadows and definition on the face, specifically to enhance or change the shape of certain features. It involves using a contour product, usually a matte powder or cream that is a few shades darker than your skin tone, to create the look of shadows.
To contour your cheekbones, you can follow these steps:
1. Choose a contour product that matches your skin tone. It should be a shade or two darker than your natural skin tone.
2. Use a contour brush or a small, angled brush to apply the contour product to the hollows of your cheeks. These are the areas directly below your cheekbones.
3. Start at the top of your ear and lightly sweep the contour product downwards, following the natural curve of your cheekbones towards the corner of your mouth.
4. Blend the contour using a clean brush or a makeup sponge, making sure to blend it seamlessly into your skin. This will create a natural-looking shadow and make your cheekbones appear more pronounced.
Remember, blending is key to achieving a natural result. You don't want any harsh lines, so take your time to blend thoroughly. Additionally, using a highlighter on the high points of your cheekbones, such as the tops of your cheekbones, can help create contrast and make them stand out even more.
Would you like to give contouring a try?
Customer: Sure, but what kind of makeup are you talking about? Blush?
Beauty Stylist: While blush can add a natural flush to the cheeks, contouring involves using a product specifically designed for creating shadows and depth. For contouring, you'll need a contour product, which is usually a matte powder or cream that is a few shades darker than your skin tone.
Blush, on the other hand, is used to add a hint of color to the cheeks and give a healthy, rosy glow. It typically comes in various shades, from soft pinks to peachy tones. While contouring focuses on creating shadows, blush is meant to add color and a subtle flush of warmth to the cheeks.
So, for enhancing your cheekbones, you'll want to focus on contouring rather than blush. However, if you'd like to add some color as well, you can certainly incorporate blush into your overall makeup routine.
Customer: Yes, thank you. Do people ever use contouring and blush together?
Beauty Stylist: Absolutely! It's quite common to use contouring and blush together in a makeup routine. While contouring adds dimension and defines the shape of your face, blush adds a healthy, natural-looking flush of color.
When choosing a blush color, opt for shades that flatter your skin tone. If you have fair skin, lighter pink or peach shades can work well. For medium to deeper skin tones, you can try richer pinks, corals, or even bronze shades.
Remember to blend the blush gently for a seamless transition between the contour and blush. You can use a clean brush or a makeup sponge to blend the edges and ensure a natural, well-blended look.
By combining contouring and blush, you can sculpt your face while adding a touch of color for a more complete and polished makeup look.
Customer: Should I use contouring on my eyelids? or just eye-shadow?
Beauty Stylist: When it comes to the eyelids, contouring is not typically used in the same way as it is for the face. To enhance your eye shape, consider using a combination of light, medium, and dark eyeshadow shades to create a gradient effect. Remember to blend the eyeshadows well for a seamless look.
Customer: I see. you can get the same effect of contouring by using different shades of colors on the eyelids.
Beauty Stylist: Absolutely! Using different shades of eyeshadow can create a beautiful effect on the eyelids, enhancing your eye shape and adding depth. By blending and layering different colors, you can achieve a variety of looks, from natural and subtle to bold and vibrant.
Customer: Will using foundation over time be bad for my complexion?
Using foundation itself doesn't necessarily mean it will be bad for your complexion, especially if you choose the right product for your skin type and take proper care of your skin. However, there are a few factors to consider to maintain a healthy complexion while using foundation:
1. Cleanse and moisturize your skin: Before applying foundation, ensure that your skin is clean and moisturized. Cleansing helps remove dirt, oil, and impurities, while moisturizing keeps your skin hydrated. This can help create a smooth canvas for foundation and prevent potential clogged pores or dry patches.
3. Use a primer: Applying a primer before foundation can create a barrier between your skin and the foundation. Primers can help smooth the skin's surface, minimize the appearance of pores, and provide a longer-lasting makeup application.
4. Remove makeup properly: At the end of the day, make sure to thoroughly remove your makeup, including foundation, using a gentle cleanser or makeup remover. This step helps prevent buildup, clogged pores, and potential skin irritations.
Customer: My lips are kind of thin. What can I do to make them look more full? Would I want to use more then one shade of lipstick color on my lips?
Certainly. You can use two or more lipstick shades to create a gradient effect. Start by applying a darker shade to the outer corners of your lips and a lighter shade to the center. Blend the colors together using a lip brush or your finger, ensuring a smooth transition between the shades. This technique can make your lips appear fuller and add a unique touch to your makeup.
- Hey, guys, Jennifer Lopez here.
I'm very excited. I'm about to walk you through my dewy makeup look and also my skincare routine that preps my skin for my dewy makeup look.
I always like to start by setting the stage with This is Santal 26… I love this candle. Everywhere I go, I take it when I go traveling on the road to hotel rooms. It's kind of a signature scent for me. I love it very much.
I also like to say a little bit of an affirmation.
“I am in perfect health always,”
“My family is in perfect health always.”
“I am youthful and timeless at every age.”
“My
life is full of abundance,
joy, and love.”
Skincare. First thing, cleanser.
I use the JLo Beauty Cleanser. It's called That Hit Single, 'cause I have to wear so much makeup all the time and reapply it all day long, something that really just washes and cleanses my face in a beautiful way.
I've always had a very simple skincare routine, and JLo Beauty was very much about that. I always kind of just was like cleanser, a little bit of a cream, sunscreen, very basic.
I know there was [were] a lot of rumors back in the day that I was like into all of these expensive cleansers, and I had to like douse myself in La Mer and stuff like that, that really wasn't true.
Next thing I do is I put in my eyedrops. and I do that before my serum, 'cause I don't like it to drip down, but I like to have bright eyes. I feel like it's the first thing everybody sees. [her eyes]
That JLo Glow Serum. When I was young, my mom and my grandma, my aunts, they all had these kinda crazy beauty secrets. One was olive oil that actually we use, and we created the Olive Complex for this very product, but there were some other ones that were a little bit crazy like mayonnaise in the hair. I just could never bring myself to do it, but my cousins used to do it.
So you see, we kinda got a beautiful glowy skin going right now. I like to put it all the way down into my decolletage. Don't worry, I'm not gonna flash you, like I have done before in some of my videos.
One of my biggest beauty secrets is sleep.
But one of my tricks for when I can't get enough sleep, there's a certain amount of hours
that I feel like you can sleep before your face falls asleep. And so, it's either under 4 or over 7, that's my rule.
This next step that I do is moisturizer, my day cream. It was so important for me to create a day cream that had sunscreen because I feel like this was one of the things that was a game changer for me in staying youthful over the years is wearing sunscreen every single day.
I know there was a lot of jokes kind of in the Spanish market. They like to say: "All you need to use [says foreign word], "and you'll look like J.Lo."
But the truth is, is when you start young, it will make a huge difference.
I'm gonna add a little bit of La Mer lip balm, which I really love. It has a nice kinda light minty taste to it and smell to it, a little bit like spearmint gum.
My next step is my JLo Beauty Eye Cream. I put eye cream, a little bit here.
I heard another beauty secret that I've lived by as well, which is until 25 [years old] you get the face that you're born with, after that you get the face you deserve.
All right, let's start the makeup look. I've never shared this with anybody. I just kinda do it naturally, so I'm just gonna go with the flow here.
The first thing I do is I do a little bit of concealer. Anywhere that you have a little bit--you see how this is a little darker than here—so I just put a little bit in there.
Years ago, I was in a mall somewhere when I was a teenager, and they were signing up people for Elite Model Management. They just showed me how to do makeup, and you basically had to pay. They said, "You could be a model," which I couldn't, I was 5 foot 5" [165 cm]. And they brought you in, and they actually showed me how to do makeup, and it was my first kind of entree into that.
But where I really, really learned how to do great makeup, I was lucky enough to work with Kevyn Aucoin. He was my first really professional makeup artist.
Then, I like to do a little bit of contour, and I take some of these darker colors in here and mix them. I don't feel like I need to just use one. A little bit above my cheekbone. Before I used to go right here in the cheekbone, but now I realize that if I do it a little bit above, it lifts the face a little more.
And Kevyn taught me, he's like, "Don't be afraid of makeup." He's like, "You can always wash it off." And I go down in here, I call this the light bulb, so we darken that, so it doesn't light up. Like, look at this chin, no.
And then I take a thinner brush, like this, with some of the lighter colors. I do a little bit of nose contour, and then, which was an old Kevyn trick, I take some of the concealer. This is a Touche Eclat concealer, which I really like. Great little pen.
And then, I brighten a little more there and then down the sides of the nose again.
Now, this is not supposed to be lip liner. This goes around the mouth, and if you blend it right, it'll cause just a tiny bit of a shadow that makes your lips look a little bit poutier.
Then I take my Chanel Vitalumiere. I've used this for years as well, and I use three different shades. I used 50, 30 ... and I just took this off... and 20. [self interruption] Put a little here and 2 squirts of 30, and I take a foundation brush, and now, I just start blending everywhere.
I have a lot of older kind of beauty icons, like Sophia Lauren and Veruschka, Brigitte Bardot, people like that. Like, I love those kind of sexy, gorgeous, sireny looks.
Now I'm taking the lighter, the 20 and the 30, and going down the light parts of my face.
Might take the larger foundation brush one more time, and I just kind of go over everything again, just to blend it all in.
And I start going up and down the nose. As you can see, I'm already startin' to look glowy. I haven't applied any highlighter I haven't done anything like that.
It starts with your skin, and it starts with how kind of rested and happy you are, because you can put on all the makeup in the world, if you're unhappy, if your skin's not healthy, just gonna look like you have a bunch of makeup on top of something that's like, you can't cover it up.
That's the thing. You can't cover up how you feel on the inside, how you take care of yourself. People see that.
The next thing that I would do, just to define the eye just a little bit. This is a Tom Ford palette, and I take the brown, 'cause I like a very soft look. And I love playing with makeup, don't get me wrong. Like, I love doing all kinds of makeup looks. You guys know that, you've seen me on the red carpet for years.
And I just go along the top of the eye. I take the lighter color here. I feel like Bob Ross, who's that guy who does the painting? Bob Ross. “Just enough.” [self question and answer]
And then, I will take a little bit of the dark, if I wanted to just kind of accent a little bit. I'll take a little bit of this color over here, which has a little bit of kind of like a luminescence in it and go along the edge of what I did, so it [even] softens it even more, so I do this.
I like cream blush, especially when you get a little older. Go ahead, take a little bit. This peach one—this one I used on my last movie that I just did.
This brand is Beautyblender, and this one is Playful Peach. So I take a little bit, again, with my foundation brush.
Take the big brush and just make sure your face matches your neck.
This is a Marc Jacobs highlighter that I've just become obsessed with. I don't know if you guys noticed my nail. I'd just gotten my nails done after my movie, 'cause they were like, I was in an action movie, and I had them really short, and it was like blood and dirt in them all day. And I was like, "The minute I'm done with the movie, "I'm putting on a set of tips, "and I'm gonna do the designs and everything." And I freaking, was playing charades with my family, banged into somebody, and they hit my nail and ripped the nail right off.
I take a very thin brush. I would take my Serge Lutens, which I've used…I don't even know if this is continued anymore. See this one says “this goes in my purse.”
And I take a little bit of this bronzer, which you can see it's gone, and I just kind of reinforce the nose contour just a bit. Then I take that thin brush again, and I soften.
So I actually learned this trick for my lips from TikTok or Instagram Reels or one of those things. They do a little line down here.
This is a Make Up For Ever pencil. I'm obsessed, it's my new fave. [favorite] And then do the same thing, a little line right here.
I really like these Fenty Beauty lip glosses, just like this peachy color.
Now, if I feel like the rest of my face is a little pale, 'cause sometimes it's darker and sometimes it's paler, I'll take the lighter pink one.
Gonna get my Anastasia pencil. We all have imperfections in our eyebrows that we have to fill in, so I'm gonna fill in. I had a chicken pock right here back in the day. [many years ago] But this eyebrow kinda stops shorter than the other one, so I just bring that out a bit.
Yep, that's a dewy J.Lo glow look. And then, to finish it off [the final touch], I take the finishing touch, Make Up For Ever.
I forgot my mascara. This is the most important part. Now I can do a 5 minute version of this for you guys one day, but maybe I'll save that for when I come out with my makeup line.
Well, the skin from here down is just as important as your face. I have a serum, a body cream, and a booty cream. If you know, you know, and you're obsessed.
Put my serum on first. This is for cellulite, this is for dimpling, this is for stretch marks.
You're going to feel it's gonna have a little heat to it, especially when you combine this product with the next product, the cream, and then we put the cream on top.
This is the first time you guys are seeing this product. I am sharing it with you first here, and I use it on my hands as well.
All right, guys, well, I mean, I couldn't be more glowy right now.
Thank you. I love you guys. Have the most amazing day.
Remember, “I am magnificent, and my life is full of joy, laughter, adventure, and love.
Success
and prosperity too.” [another
affirmation]
Put it all in there [laughs].
Bye.
