Culture Shock
- Culture shock happens when an individual leaves the comfort of their home and goes to a foreign location.
- It happens because of an individual's unfamiliarity with local customs, language, and acceptable behavior.
- For example, drinking bottled water in America is a choice, but in some countries, it's a necessity.
- In some countries, dining out with friends or co-workers can take a long time.
- In some countries, people have to pay to use public toilets.
- Some places don't provide toilet paper, so when traveling, carry your own.
- In the USA, an arm's length distance between people is a good measure of personal space.
- In the USA, when waiters check on you often, it's considered good service.
- In other countries, however, it's considered an intrusion on people's social time together.
