Culture Shock

  1. Culture shock happens when an individual leaves the comfort of their home and goes to a foreign location.
  2. It happens because of an individual's unfamiliarity with local customs, language, and acceptable behavior.
  3. For example, drinking bottled water in America is a choice, but in some countries, it's a necessity.
  4. In some countries, dining out with friends or co-workers can take a long time.
  5. In some countries, people have to pay to use public toilets.
  6. Some places don't provide toilet paper, so when traveling, carry your own.
  7. In the USA, an arm's length distance between people is a good measure of personal space.
  8. In the USA, when waiters check on you often, it's considered good service.
  9. In other countries, however, it's considered an intrusion on people's social time together.
