Foreign Accent Syndrome

  1. Mei Pei, a doctor, woke up one morning speaking with a completely different accent.
  2. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't speak with her usual voice.
  3. Susan went shopping with her Aunt and in the middle of a sentence her accent suddenly changed.
  4. The people around them thought they were faking in order to get attention.
  5. A famous TV show decided to bring the two women together and try to find out what was going on.
  6. They took them to a brain surgeon who gave both women a neurological scan of the brain.
  7. They were both diagnosed with foreign accent syndrome (FAS), a speech disorder.
  8. FAS usually happens after a head injury, stroke, or some other type of damage to the brain.
