Verbals Are Everywhere

Verbals are quite versatile. They can appear at the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence — and sometimes in more than one place at once.

In these examples we have expanded the verbals to include verb+ed (past participle) forms as well as verb+ing. The verbal phrase is highlighted in each sentence — see if you can spot where it sits.

Verbal Phrase at the Start

Running quickly, the athlete crossed the finish line first.
Excited about the trip, he packed his bags early.
Hiking in the mountains, they enjoyed breathtaking views.
Frozen in place, he watched as the event unfolded before him.
Feeling tired after a long day, she decided to go to bed early.
Running through the park, she felt a sense of freedom.
